Chapter Seven

Deborah glared at Becky over breakfast that morning. “This is all your fault.” Her voice trembled.

The statement stopped Shea’s movement to the bedroom to catch some sleep. She turned. “What did you say?”

Deborah shrugged. “I think you heard me.”

“Why would you say that?” Tears welled in Becky’s eyes.

“You rented this place. If you’d chosen somewhere else, we wouldn’t be in this mess.”

“The price was good and the cabin gorgeous in the photos.” Becky hung her head.

“It’s no one’s fault but those twisted men out there.” Shea tried to cross her arms and failed as it pulled on the wounds on her left arm. “We can’t turn on each other.” She eyed each of the women at the table. “I’m going to check on Tessa, then try and catch a few hours of sleep. Then, we’ve got work to do.”

“What kind of work?” Emma glanced up from the toast on a napkin in front of her.

“Booby traps.” It was only a matter of time before the men tried to get in. She wanted to leave a few surprises for them. Her and the other girls would need every advantage they could get.

Tessa softly snored from her bed. The fresh strip of a ripped-up sheet showed Becky had tended to her before going to the kitchen.

Sleep took a while to overtake her as Shea’s mind spun with the kind of traps she could leave. She wasn’t sure how much help the others would be, but putting them to work helping her would, hopefully, keep them from spiraling further into despair. Hope and determination was all they had to get them out alive.

She stared at the ceiling. She hadn’t prayed in a long time, but she sent up a quick one, just in case God was listening. A few minutes later, her eyes drifted closed.

When she woke, Tessa smiled at her from her bed. “We’re a pair, aren’t we?”

Shea yawned, stretched, and sat up. “We look like we’ve been in a war. You okay?”

“If I don’t move much.”

“Then don’t move.”

“I need to use the restroom.”

Shea got to her feet. “I’ll help you, then it’s back to bed for you.” She studied her friend’s face. “I want you to promise me something.”

“Anything. I owe you my life.”

“When those men get in, I want you to hide under the bed. As far back as possible so they don’t see you.”

Tessa’s dark skin paled. “You think they will.” It wasn’t a question.

“I know they will.” She helped her to the bathroom and waited while she relieved herself and brushed her teeth, then helped her back to bed. “Promise me.”

“I promise. They won’t get me again.” She climbed under the quilt and lifted up her pillow. A blood-stained knife lay there. “I have the very one they tried to kill me with.”

“That’s my girl.” Shea smiled and rejoined the others in the front room. “Here’s the plan.” Becky stared out the window. “What?” Shea’s smile faded.

“They’re gone.”

“What?” Shea joined her. Sure enough, the trucks were gone. No armed guard patrolled out front.
